A delegation of city-based NGO, Voice of Martyrs, called on Punjab governor Shivraj Patil and handed him a memorandum demanding better treatment for the dependents of martyrs.
Founder president Vijay Sangwan led the delegation, which also included secretary Shiv Kumar, Captain Jaipal Singh, Surender Kaur and others.
Sangwan said, "We must be proud of our martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the sake of our country. The nation owes a lot to such families, who lost their loved ones fighting a battle on the borders or elsewhere."
The delegation demanded `1 crore as immediate relief for the families of martyrs as was given to sportsmen. It was also demanded that martyrs' families be given a compensation between `2 crore and `5 crore and a government job to at least one member from their family. Reservation in state legislatures and Parliament and legislatures was also demanded.
